Students and Parents Have Different Dreams, but Share Money Worries

Most students dream of attending college on the East Coast; their parents would prefer they choose a certain West Coast school. But they all have the same worries about financing higher education.

These are some of the results of the Princeton Review 2007 "College Hopes & Worries Survey" report. The findings below are based on responses from 5,854 people: 78 percent were high school students applying to colleges and 22 percent were parents of college applicants.

What would be your "dream college?"/What college would you most like to attend (or see your child attend) if chance of being accepted or cost were not an issue?

The schools students most named were:
   
1) New York University
    2) Harvard
    3) Stanford
    4) Princeton
    5) Columbia

The schools parents most named were:
    1) Stanford
    2) Princeton
    3)  Harvard
    4)  Brown
    5)  Notre Dame

New York University is the top choice of students' for the third year in-a-row. However, parents would like their sons and daughters to attend Stanford University instead.

Included in the survey questions were some that asked about financial hopes and worries:

How necessary will financial aid (education loans, scholarships or grants) be to pay for your (your child's) college education?

  •  51 percent     Extremely
  •  27 percent     Very
  •  18 percent     Somewhat
  •    4 percent     Not at all

What's your biggest concern about applying to or attending college?

  •   
  • 32 percent Will get into first-choice college, but won't have sufficient funds/financial aid to attend
  •   
  • 30 percent Won't get into first-choice college
  •   
  • 25 percent Will get into a college I/my child want(s) to attend, but will take on major loan debt to do so
  •   
  • 13 percent Will attend a college I/my child may regret

    What part of college life may be most challenging for you/your child?

  •   
  • 38 percent Money matters: budgeting an allowance and spending wisely
  •   
  • 34 percent Academics: keeping up with coursework
  •   
  • 15 percent Dorm life: living with a roommate
  •   
  • 13 percent Social scene: dealing with drinking, drugs and dating issues
