College Matchmaking — Online
By Ian Crawford, Web Communications Editor

Two new Web sites promise to help students find their match. But this isn't an opportunity to meet someone new on campus; rather it helps students find colleges that match their interests.

Both Cappex and Zinch are free for students. The sites aim to help students, parents, guidance counselors and school administrators by connecting them all via the Web. Indeed, Cappex stands for “college application exchange.”

The first step is for the student to create a profile with their interests, academic qualifications and extracurricular experience. Then they make the profile available for viewing by colleges that have also signed up on the Web sites. The services match the student with colleges based on their profiles and the colleges can contact the student with application information.

Colleges can use the Web sites as a recruiting tool by searching the databases for prospective students. Guidance counselors are encouraged to use the services to aid their students in the selection process.

Mick Hagen is the president/founder of Zinch. He has first-hand knowledge of the college selection process as he is a member of the Princeton University class of '09.

According to Mick he founded Zinch “to level the playing field and to provide a means by which individuality and greatness can be extracted from everyone during the college admissions process. Zinch turns the tables of college admissions, putting the control back in the hands of the student. Every student will now have an equal opportunity to basically say, ‘This is me. Love me, hate me, recruit me, or trash me. This is who I am.'”

Mike Moyer, president and chief operating officer of Cappex believes his Web site “provides a venue for colleges and students to meet and interact in a more efficient and effective way. Opportunities are often missed because colleges and students are simply unaware of one another.”
