Student Loan Discharge

If you are considered eligible, your student loan will be forgiven and you will not have to repay it. Reasons for complete student loan discharge include:

Total and permanent disability

You might be considered totally and permanently disabled if you are unable to work and earn money, or attend school, because of a medical impairment—which must be certified by a doctor of medicine or osteopathy.

Death

If a borrower dies, his or her loan will be discharged. Cancellation because of the borrower's death (or, in the case of Parent PLUS Loans, the death of the student for whom the parent borrowed) is based on an original or certified copy of the death certificate submitted to the holder of the loan.

Closed school

If you are unable to complete your program of study because your school closed during your enrollment or an approved leave of absence, your loan might be forgiven. You also might be eligible if you withdrew from the school within 90 days of its closure date. You must complete additional eligibility requirements, as well as certification forms, to request this discharge.

Other loan forgiveness programs promote careers in fields that are under-serviced or fields that meet particular community needs.
