Worried about when your first student loan payment might be due? Afraid you might have already missed some payments? The best way to learn your current loan status is to contact your lender; keep in mind that you may have obtained a student loan(s) from one or more lender. Another way to glean where you stand in the financial aid process is to review your student loan paperwork carefully.
If you have been out of school for fewer than six months, you are in your grace period and will soon be entering repayment. Contact your lender to ensure they have your current address and phone number so they can send you your repayment information.
If you have been out of school for longer than six months, you should have received repayment information from your lender. If you haven’t, contact your lender immediately so you can avoid becoming delinquent.
If you have missed payments, you might be delinquent on your student loan. For assistance in resolving your delinquency, contact your lender or EdFund Default Prevention Services at 800.298.9490.
If you have missed 12 or more payments, you might have defaulted on your student loan. You can find a repayment option that will work for you by calling EdFund at 800.367.1589.
If your student loan paperwork is not handy and you are unsure of which lender you have, try accessing the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), a central database for student aid information—both Pell Grants and federally guaranteed loans—compiled and maintained by the Department of Education. It provides 24/7 access.
